Fume-Belching Ferries Outpace Cars in Sulphur Pollution Across EU Ports

Analysis finds ferries emitting more harmful sulphur oxides than vehicles in major European port cities like Dublin, Helsinki, and Tallinn.
A recent analysis has revealed a troubling finding: fume-belching ferries are emitting more sulphur pollution than cars in several of Europe's largest port cities. Dublin, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Tallinn are among the 13 of Europe's 15 biggest port cities that are more choked by sulphur oxides (SOx) from ferries than road vehicles, according to data shared exclusively with the Guardian.
The report, conducted by Transport & Environment, a non-profit organization focused on sustainable transportation, sheds light on the disproportionate impact of ferry emissions in these urban areas. While cars and other vehicles have made strides in reducing their environmental footprint, the maritime sector appears to be lagging behind when it comes to curbing harmful sulphur releases.
