German Chancellor Explores Tech Opportunities in China's Hangzhou

German Chancellor Olaf Merz has traveled to the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, known as a thriving technology and innovation hub, accompanied by a delegation of German business leaders. The visit aims to explore potential business opportunities and partnerships between German and Chinese companies operating in the region.

Hangzhou is home to a number of prominent tech firms, including the AI company DeepSeek and e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has its global headquarters in the city. The German delegation, which includes representatives from major industries such as automotive, manufacturing, and renewable energy, is seeking to gain a better understanding of the local tech ecosystem and identify areas for collaboration.

"Hangzhou has emerged as a crucial center of technological innovation in China, and we believe there are significant opportunities for German companies to partner with their Chinese counterparts and tap into the region's dynamic market," said Merz during a press conference in the city.

The visit comes at a time when Germany and China are seeking to strengthen their economic ties, despite some ongoing geopolitical tensions. Merz has emphasized the importance of maintaining open dialogue and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships between the two countries.
