Governments Subsidize Fossil Fuels in Australia at Alarming Rates

New analysis reveals Australia's state and federal governments are subsidizing fossil fuel use at an unprecedented pace, exceeding $30K per minute and growing faster than NDIS funding.
Australia's state and federal governments are heavily subsidizing fossil fuel use and production at an alarming rate, according to a new analysis from the Australia Institute. The data shows that subsidies for coal, gas, and oil products increased by nearly 10% in the past year, reaching $16.3 billion in 2025-26, equivalent to $31,020 per minute.
This subsidization of the fossil fuel industry is contributing to the climate crisis and growing at a faster pace than funding for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The analysis underscores the need for Australia to reevaluate its energy policies and transition towards renewable, sustainable sources of power in order to mitigate the environmental impact of its reliance on fossil fuels.
