High-Stakes Nuclear Talks: US and Iran Negotiate Critical Path Forward
As tensions continue to simmer between the United States and Iran, negotiators from both sides are meeting in Geneva today for critical talks on Tehran's nuclear program. Iran insists a deal is possible, but only if Washington is willing to meet three key preconditions: acknowledging Iran's symbolic right to enrich uranium, allowing Tehran to dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, and refraining from imposing controls on Iran's ballistic missile program.
In his recent State of the Union address, President Trump veered sharply away from the negotiating path adopted by his predecessor, warning about Iran's ballistic missiles reaching Europe, accusing Iran of being the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and once again claiming that Iran has not truly forsworn its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Trump also alleged that 32,000 demonstrators have been killed by Iranian authorities during recent protests.

The stakes are high as the two sides attempt to chart a path forward. Democrats have criticized Trump's hardline rhetoric and approach, arguing that it is counterproductive and could jeopardize the possibility of a diplomatic resolution.
