Hiking for Conservation: Brazil's Trail Network Expands

Brazil's growing network of hiking trails aims to develop local economies and preserve the environment through eco-tourism and community engagement.
Brazil's network of long-distance hiking trails is rapidly expanding, with the recent opening of the Caminhos da Ibiapaba trail in the northeast region. Spanning 186km (115 miles), this new waymarked footpath follows routes once used by 19th-century merchants, showcasing the country's diverse landscapes and rural communities.
The goal of these trail projects is twofold: to develop local economies through eco-tourism, and to better preserve the environment by fostering a deeper connection between hikers and the natural world. As Yuri Sá, coordinator of the Caminhos da Ibiapaba project, explains,
