Honda Scraps Plans for Sony Electric Vehicles

Honda cancels joint electric vehicle development with Sony, leaving its EV ambitions in flux as it struggles to compete in the rapidly evolving battery-powered car market.
In a surprising move, Honda has announced the cancellation of its electric vehicle collaboration with electronics giant Sony. The automaker, long known for its pioneering work in hybrid technology, has found itself struggling to keep pace with the rapid advancements in the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) segment.
Honda's EV Woes
Honda's electric car efforts have been met with mixed results so far. The Honda e, a compact and stylish city car, managed to attract just 12,000 buyers across Europe and Japan over the past four years. In North America, the Honda Prologue, a rebadged General Motors model sharing the Chevrolet Blazer's platform, has seen more success, selling 33,000 units in 2024 and another 39,000 the following year. However, the Prologue's sales have plummeted since the end of the federal clean vehicle tax credit last fall, and it is set to cease production by the end of this year.
