A troubling new report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) has uncovered a horrifying pattern of civilian abuses in Burkina Faso as the country's military forces clash with allied armed groups. According to the investigation, more than 1,800 civilians have been killed by both the army and these allied militias since the start of 2023 alone.
The report, titled "Burkina Faso: Security Forces, Allies Commit Abuses", details numerous instances of extrajudicial killings, torture, arbitrary detentions, and other grave human rights violations perpetrated against the civilian population. HRW researchers spoke with dozens of victims and witnesses, painting a disturbing picture of the ongoing crisis in the West African nation.
