House of Lords Stalls Assisted Dying Bill, Facing Growing Backlash
The House of Lords has come under fire for stalling a bill that would allow assisted dying in the UK, with MP Kim Leadbeater saying the move has 'signed its own death warrant'. Leadbeater, whose private member's bill on the issue looks set to run out of time, joined more than a dozen terminally ill and bereaved people in protest outside parliament on the second anniversary of the death at Dignitas of prominent assisted dying campaigner Paola Marra.
Leadbeater said many MPs, who had already voted by a majority to pass the bill, were 'angry and upset' by the addition of around 1,200 amendments in the Lords, which will likely see the bill fall without a vote. The House of Lords' actions have been described as a betrayal of the will of the people and a violation of the democratic process.
