Hybrid Car Sales Soar as Aussies Ditch Petrol Vehicles

New AAA data shows petrol-electric hybrid cars hitting record sales highs in Australia as buyers steer away from traditional fuel vehicles.
New data from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) shows a remarkable shift in consumer preferences, with petrol-electric hybrid vehicle sales reaching unprecedented levels in Australia. In the fourth quarter of 2025, a staggering 55,458 new hybrids were sold, accounting for a remarkable 19.13% of all new light vehicle sales. This figure comfortably eclipsed the previous record of 16.7% set in the September quarter of 2024.
The trend extends beyond just hybrid models, with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also experiencing a surge in popularity. In the same period, 15,411 PHEVs were sold, making up 5.32% of light vehicle sales, up from the previous record of 4.82% in the January quarter of 2025.

This shift in consumer behavior is a clear indication that Australians are increasingly gravitating towards more sustainable and environmentally-friendly transportation options. The rise of hybrid and electric vehicles can be attributed to a number of factors, including growing environmental awareness, government incentives, and advancements in battery technology that have made these vehicles more practical and affordable for mainstream buyers.
Interestingly, the data also shows a corresponding decline in the market share of traditional petrol vehicles. In the fourth quarter of 2025, petrol vehicles fell to a record quarterly low of 66.3% of sales, further underscoring the changing preferences of Australian consumers.
Industry experts believe this trend is likely to continue, as more Australians prioritize fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and the overall environmental impact of their transportation choices. With the government's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the growing public demand for sustainable mobility solutions, the future of the Australian automotive market appears to be increasingly electric and hybrid-powered.
The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) data provides a compelling snapshot of the evolving landscape of the Australian car market, highlighting the rapid adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles as consumers seek more environmentally-friendly transportation options.
