ICE Struggles to Vet New Hires Amid Surging Recruitment Under Trump

ICE faces vetting delays and misconduct concerns as it rapidly expands hiring under the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.
In the midst of an unprecedented hiring surge under the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is struggling to keep up with the influx of new recruits, raising concerns about the agency's ability to properly vet applicants. According to an internal email obtained by Reuters, ICE is laying out a process to handle allegations of past misconduct among new hires as the agency grapples with stalled background checks and a high volume of new employees.
The email, sent to supervisors within ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) division, acknowledged the challenges posed by the agency's rapid expansion. With a surge in new hires, ICE is finding it difficult to ensure thorough vetting, potentially creating uncertainty for field offices when allegations of past misconduct arise. To address this issue, the agency is directing such allegations to be referred to its internal Integrity Investigations Unit (IIU).
The concerns over ICE's hiring practices come as the Trump administration has made a priority of cracking down on immigration, both legal and illegal. The president has pushed for a dramatic increase in the size of ICE, leading to a historic recruitment drive that has strained the agency's resources and ability to properly vet new employees.
