Iconic World Heritage Sites Threatened by Climate Change

Explore how rising temperatures are endangering some of the world's most renowned UNESCO World Heritage sites, from Easter Island to the Great Wall of China.
The world's most iconic and historically significant landmarks, designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites, are increasingly facing threats from the devastating impacts of climate change. From the remote Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean to the legendary Great Wall of China, these cultural and natural wonders that have stood the test of time are now under serious risk due to rising global temperatures.
One of the most alarming examples is Easter Island, home to the famous moai statues. Rising sea levels and increased erosion have already damaged many of the island's historic sites, and scientists warn that the problem will only worsen in the coming years. "We're seeing the sea levels rise and the waves hitting the coast much more violently," said local archaeologist Sonia Haoa. "It's a race against time to protect these precious monuments."
