Illinois Erupts in Final Four Triumph After 21-Year Drought

Illinois basketball storms into the Final Four after a 21-year absence, dominating Iowa behind Keaton Wagler's 25-point performance. The Illini are determined to go all the way.
Illinois is heading to the Final Four for the first time in 21 years, and Andrej Stojakovic made clear the Fighting Illini have much bigger goals. "I don't want anybody to think this is it," he said. "We didn't get to the Final Four just to get there. We're coming to win two more games."
The Illini dominated Iowa throughout the game, bludgeoning them in the paint and on the glass. Keaton Wagler led the charge with 25 points, showcasing his physicality and skill inside.
"We knew we had a size advantage and we really wanted to exploit that," said Wagler. "We were able to get a lot of second-chance points and really take control of the game."
The Illini defense was also stifling, holding the Hawkeyes to just 38% shooting from the field. Illinois forced 14 turnovers and blocked 6 shots, showcasing their length and athleticism.
"They were just the better team tonight," said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. "We couldn't match their physicality and they made us pay for our mistakes."
The Illini will now advance to the Final Four, where they will face the winner of the Arizona-Purdue matchup. Illinois is determined to end their Final Four drought and bring home the school's first NCAA Championship since 2005.
"This is just the first step," said Stojakovic. "We're not satisfied with just being here. We want to win it all."
