Iran Appoints New Security Chief After High-Profile Attack

Iran names former IRGC commander Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new chief of the Supreme National Security Council, replacing the late Ali Larijani.
Tehran, Iran - In the wake of the recent U.S.-Israeli attack that killed a top Iranian security official, the Iranian government has named a new successor to lead the country's Supreme National Security Council. Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has been appointed to replace the late Ali Larijani as the council's chief.
Larijani, who had served in the role since 2005, was killed in the U.S. and Israeli-orchestrated attack that targeted a number of senior Iranian officials. The attack, which took place on Iranian soil, has been a major source of tension between Iran and the West, with Tehran vowing retaliation for the assassination.
