Iran Conflict to Hit UK Families With £480 Annual Cost Hike

New analysis finds British households will face soaring energy and fuel bills due to Middle East tensions, straining budgets by almost £500 this year.
A prominent British thinktank has warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East will significantly impact UK household budgets, with families expected to pay nearly £480 more this year for energy and transportation costs.
The Resolution Foundation analysis found that rising prices for gas, electricity, and gasoline stemming from the Iran war will be the primary drivers of this financial strain. Households across the country will feel the squeeze of these higher bills, which are projected to spike as a result of the geopolitical tensions in the region.
"Britons are facing a real cost-of-living crisis due to this conflict," said Jack Leslie, a senior economist at the Resolution Foundation. "The combination of soaring energy bills and fuel prices is going to leave many families hundreds of pounds worse off in 2023."

The foundation's report noted that the average UK household currently spends around £3,000 per year on electricity, gas, and vehicle fuel. However, with the war's impact on global energy markets, that figure is expected to rise by nearly 16% over the next 12 months.
"Households are already struggling with the effects of high inflation and interest rate hikes," added Leslie. "This additional strain from the Middle East conflict is going to make it even harder for many Britons to make ends meet."

While the government has introduced some support measures, such as energy bill discounts and fuel duty cuts, the Resolution Foundation believes these steps will only partially offset the financial pressures faced by UK families. The thinktank is calling for more comprehensive aid to help households navigate the challenging economic conditions ahead.
"Policymakers need to closely monitor the situation and be prepared to provide additional assistance if the costs of this war continue to escalate," concluded Leslie. "The livelihood of millions of Britons hangs in the balance."
