Iran Nuclear Deterrent: A Potential Necessity in the Face of War

Former US diplomat Henry Ensher warns that the ongoing conflict could drive Iran to accelerate its nuclear program as a defensive measure against external threats.
As the global tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear program continue to escalate, former US diplomat Henry Ensher has warned that the current conflict might push Iran to develop a nuclear deterrent at a faster pace. In a recent interview, Ensher, who previously served as the US ambassador to Algeria, cautioned that future Iranian leadership may view a nuclear weapon as a defensive necessity in the face of the country's precarious geopolitical situation.
Ensher's comments come at a critical juncture, as the world powers and Iran engage in complex negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The agreement, which placed strict limits on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, has been on life support since the United States unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018 under the Trump administration.
According to Ensher, the ongoing conflict and the perceived threats Iran faces could lead its leadership to conclude that a nuclear deterrent is the only way to ensure the country's security and sovereignty.
