Iran Vows to Escalate Fight as New Supreme Leader Takes Reins

Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issues first message, pledging to keep Strait of Hormuz closed and attack US assets in the region.
Iran has issued its first message in the name of its new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, vowing to keep the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz closed and to continue attacking US bases in the region. The missive, read out on state TV, comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the West following the recent killing of a top Iranian general by the US.
The statement, attributed to the younger Khamenei, is seen as an attempt by Iran's leadership to project an image of continuity and strength in the wake of the death of his father, the long-ruling Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in January. However, the fact that the message was read out rather than delivered live or on video has done little to satisfy those seeking concrete proof that the younger Khamenei is actually alive and in control.
In the statement, the new supreme leader pledged that Iran would maintain its hardline stance against the US and its allies, vowing to keep the vital Strait of Hormuz closed to international shipping and to continue attacks on US military assets in the region. The strait, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and Iran has repeatedly threatened to close it in the event of a conflict.
The message also reiterated Iran's support for its proxies and allies in the region, including the Houthi rebels in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and vowed to continue providing them with weapons and funding. This is seen as an attempt to project an image of regional influence and to deter any potential aggression against Iran.
