Iraqi Soccer Team Pleads for World Cup Playoff Delay Amid Regional Tensions

Iraq's national soccer team coach has urged FIFA to postpone their World Cup playoff match, citing the need for his scattered players to gather and prepare amidst escalating US-Iran tensions.
Iraq's national soccer team coach Graham Arnold has appealed to FIFA to delay their upcoming World Cup playoff match, citing the need for his players to assemble and prepare amidst the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The crucial match is currently scheduled for March 31, but Arnold believes a postponement is necessary to ensure his team is ready to compete.
The Iraq national team is scattered across the region, with players representing clubs in countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Arnold expressed concern over the ability of his squad to safely travel and convene for the high-stakes fixture, given the heightened security risks in the region.
"It's important that we have the best possible preparation for this game," Arnold said. "With the current situation, it's going to be very difficult for the players to gather and train together. A delay would give us the time we need to get everyone together and ensure we're ready to compete at the highest level."
The World Cup playoff match between Iraq and an opponent yet to be determined holds significant importance for the Iraqi national team, which is seeking to qualify for the prestigious global tournament for the first time since 2006. A victory would secure Iraq's spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
However, the escalating tensions in the region, including the recent US airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, have cast doubt over the feasibility of the scheduled match. Arnold believes a postponement would allow his players to focus on their preparations without the added stress and uncertainty of the geopolitical situation.
"Our sole focus should be on the game and ensuring we're in the best possible shape to compete," Arnold said. "A delay from FIFA would go a long way in helping us achieve that goal."
The Iraqi Football Association has not yet formally requested a postponement from FIFA, but Arnold's public appeal is likely to put pressure on the governing body to consider the matter. With the World Cup playoffs set to commence in just over two months, the Iraqi national team and its supporters will be anxiously awaiting FIFA's decision.
