Israel Targets Iran's Forces, Fuels Uprising Hopes
Israel's strikes against Iran's security apparatus may be intended to encourage anti-government protests and unrest, according to an expert at the Middle East Institute.
Israel's recent attacks targeting Iran's security forces may be an attempt to stoke anti-government sentiment and encourage an uprising within the country, according to Raz Zimmt, director of the Iran Program at the Middle East Institute (MEI).
Zimmt's analysis comes after Israel claimed responsibility for a drone strike that killed two members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) earlier this month. The strike was the latest in a series of reported Israeli operations against Iranian security and nuclear facilities, which have increased in scope and frequency in recent months.
{{IMAGE_PLACEHOLDER}}While Israel has not officially confirmed its involvement in all of the attacks, the Israeli government has made it clear that it views Iran's nuclear program and regional influence as major threats. By striking Iran's security apparatus, Israel may be seeking to undermine the regime's ability to respond to domestic unrest and protests, Zimmt suggests.
