John Lewis Boss Pay Rises 21% as Retailer Cuts 3,300 Jobs

John Lewis Partnership (JLP) chair Jason Tarry saw his annual salary increase by 21% to £1.2 million in the year to January, even as the retailer cut 3,300 jobs across its John Lewis and Waitrose stores.
Tarry, who assumed the chair position in September 2024, previously earned £990,000 per year, making his latest pay raise a significant jump in compensation despite the company's workforce reductions during the same period.

The pay increase for Tarry comes as the John Lewis Partnership, which operates both the John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, has been forced to make difficult decisions to streamline its operations and adapt to changing consumer habits accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
