John Lewis Sees Profit Surge, Restores Annual Bonuses for Staff

The employee-owned retail group behind John Lewis and Waitrose reports a 6% rise in underlying profits, enabling the first annual staff bonus in 4 years.
In a welcome move for its dedicated workforce, the parent company of iconic British retailers John Lewis and Waitrose has announced the restoration of its annual staff bonus program. This comes after the employee-owned partnership reported a 6% increase in underlying profits, leading to a 2% bonus payout for its so-called 'partners'.
The return of the yearly bonus marks the first time in four years that John Lewis employees have received this financial reward, underscoring the challenging economic environment the retail group has navigated in recent years. However, with sales rising to £13.4 billion, the company's fortunes appear to be on the upswing.

John Lewis Partnership, which operates both the John Lewis department store chain and the Waitrose supermarket brand, has long prided itself on its unique employee-ownership model. All staff, known as 'partners', are entitled to a share of the company's profits through an annual bonus scheme. The fact that this has been reinstated will no doubt be welcomed by the company's dedicated workforce, who have weathered a period of uncertainty in the retail sector.
Commenting on the results, Dame Sharon White, Chair of the John Lewis Partnership, stated: "We're really pleased to be able to pay a bonus this year, recognizing the huge contribution our partners have made." She went on to note that the partnership's strategy of diversifying its offerings and improving operational efficiency had helped drive the improved financial performance.
The return of the annual bonus comes as a morale boost for John Lewis staff, who have faced a turbulent few years. In 2020, the company was forced to make 1,500 redundancies and close a number of stores as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the high street. However, the company's latest results suggest it is navigating the post-pandemic landscape more successfully, with consumers returning to its stores and website.
Looking ahead, the John Lewis Partnership will be hoping to build on this momentum and continue delivering strong financial results. With the bonus program reinstated, the company will be aiming to retain and motivate its valuable workforce, who are crucial to delivering the high levels of customer service that have long been a hallmark of the John Lewis and Waitrose brands.
