Journalists at ProPublica Walkout: Balancing AI Concerns and Newsroom Demands

Nonprofit newsroom ProPublica sees its first major labor action as journalists strike for a day, citing concerns over AI integration and workplace conditions.
ProPublica, one of the country's largest nonprofit newsrooms, experienced its first major labor action recently as journalists went on a one-day strike. The walkout was prompted by a range of concerns, including the newsroom's increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) tools and other workplace issues.
The strike, which took place on a Thursday, came after months of negotiations between ProPublica's management and the NewsGuild of New York, the union representing the newsroom's employees. While the use of AI in the newsroom was a key factor, the employees also cited concerns over pay, benefits, and job security as contributing to the decision to strike.
