Landmark US Trial Reveals Young Woman's Lifelong Social Media Addiction

20-year-old lead plaintiff testifies about being hooked on YouTube at 6 and Instagram at 9, leading to depression and self-harm by age 10.
A young woman at the center of a landmark trial against social media giants has testified for the first time, revealing her lifelong battle with social media addiction. The 20-year-old, known by her initials KGM, is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit alleging that YouTube and Meta (the parent company of Instagram and Facebook) intentionally create addictive products that have led to mental health issues in young people.
KGM testified that her struggles with social media began at a shockingly young age - she says she started getting hooked on YouTube at just 6 years old. By the time she was 9, she had also become addicted to Instagram. The intense use of these platforms had a severe impact on her mental health, leading to depression and self-harm by the age of 10.
