Lawmakers Demand Transparency on Data Center Energy Usage

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Josh Hawley call for mandatory annual energy reporting from data centers to the Energy Information Agency, citing concerns over environmental impact.
In a move aimed at shedding light on the environmental impact of the booming data center industry, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Josh Hawley have sent a letter to the Energy Information Agency (EIA) demanding increased transparency around the electricity consumption of data centers across the United States.
The senators' request comes as the growth of cloud computing, streaming services, and an increasingly digitized economy have fueled a rapid expansion of data center infrastructure nationwide. With these facilities housing the servers and hardware that power the digital world, their energy usage has become a significant and concerning factor in global greenhouse gas emissions.
In their letter, Warren and Hawley note that the EIA currently collects limited data on data center energy consumption, with the most recent comprehensive survey dating back to 2016. They are now calling for the agency to mandate annual electricity usage disclosures from all data center operators, providing a more up-to-date and transparent picture of the sector's environmental footprint.
