Lobbyists Caught Playing Both Sides of the PFAS Debate

Top US lobbying firms are simultaneously lobbying for and against regulations on PFAS 'forever chemicals,' raising serious conflict of interest concerns.
In a troubling revelation, a non-profit review has uncovered that some of the top lobbying firms in the US are simultaneously working both sides of the PFAS 'forever chemicals' issue. This raises serious conflict of interest questions and concerns that their activity is slowing states' efforts to rein in this pressing public health threat.
The review, conducted by the non-profit F-Minus, examined the lobbying records of six states and found a range of scenarios in which firms lobbied both for and against PFAS regulations. Most concerning is the fact that PFAS chemicals are linked to cancer, yet some of these firms are representing both the chemical industry and cancer advocacy groups.
For example, the lobbying firm Holland & Knight works for the American Chemistry Council, which represents the nation's largest PFAS makers and aggressively opposes most regulations. At the same time, Holland & Knight also lobbies for the American Cancer Society. This blatant conflict of interest highlights the lengths to which some lobbyists will go to protect their interests, even at the expense of public health and safety.
