Malaysia Proposes Stricter Expat Rules, Risking Talent Exodus

Malaysia aims to curb foreign workers to boost local hiring and wages, but experts warn the policy could drive out skilled talent and stifle economic growth.
In a move that has sparked concerns about a potential talent flight, the Malaysian government is proposing sweeping changes to its policies governing foreign workers. The proposed measures are designed to encourage more local hiring and raise incomes, but experts warn they could have unintended consequences that stifle the country's economic growth.
The plan, which is still in the development stage, involves slashing the number of foreign workers across various sectors, including manufacturing, construction, and services. This shift in policy is driven by a desire to boost employment opportunities for Malaysian citizens and address perceived imbalances in the labor market.
"The government wants to reduce the reliance on foreign workers and create more job opportunities for Malaysians," said Arman Abdul Razak, a senior researcher at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies in Kuala Lumpur. "However, there are concerns that this could lead to a shortage of skilled labor and hurt certain industries that depend on foreign expertise."
