Mandatory Avian Flu Housing Measures Lifted Across the UK

Poultry and captive birds in England and Wales no longer required to be housed as avian influenza restrictions are lifted. Read about the latest updates and implications.
After over a year of mandatory housing requirements for poultry and captive birds in England and Wales, the UK government has announced that these measures will be lifted as of Thursday, April 9th. The unprecedented avian influenza outbreak that prompted the housing order has subsided, allowing authorities to ease the restrictions that had been in place since November 2020.
The mandatory housing order was implemented to curb the spread of the H5N8 strain of avian influenza, which had been detected in various parts of the UK. By requiring all commercial and backyard poultry flocks to be kept indoors, the government aimed to minimize contact between wild birds and domestic flocks, reducing the risk of further outbreaks. This measure was critical in controlling the situation and preventing significant losses within the poultry industry.
