Massive Explosion Rocks Texas Refinery, Locals Shake With Tremors

An oil refinery fire near the Texas coast was quickly extinguished, but not before a large explosion sent plumes of smoke into the air. No injuries reported as residents sheltered in place.
Texas residents were left shaken after a massive explosion rocked an oil refinery near the Gulf Coast, sending tremors through nearby communities. The blast at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, about 90 miles east of Houston, ignited a large fire that authorities were able to quickly extinguish, though not before a towering plume of black smoke billowed into the sky.
Despite the intensity of the explosion, officials reported no injuries as a temporary shelter-in-place order was issued for parts of the west side of Port Arthur. Charlotte M. Moses, the city's mayor, urged residents to stay indoors as the situation unfolded, with many reporting their homes shaking from the force of the blast.
