In a resounding show of support, thousands of Istanbul residents took to the streets to rally behind their jailed mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu. The demonstration came exactly one year after Imamoglu's arrest on charges of terrorism and corruption, which have been widely condemned as politically motivated.
Imamoglu, a rising political star and member of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), has been a thorn in the side of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party. His 2019 victory in the Istanbul mayoral election was seen as a major blow to the government's grip on power in Turkey's largest city.
