Mexico Demands Answers: ICE Deaths of Its Citizens Spark Outrage

Mexico is applying intense pressure on the United States government over the deaths of its citizens in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. The issue has become a major point of contention between the two neighboring countries, with Mexico demanding answers and accountability for the rising number of its nationals who have died while in the custody of U.S. immigration authorities.
The latest incident occurred last month when a 40-year-old Mexican man named Ramiro Hernandez-Mejia died at an ICE detention center in Louisiana. His death marks the 9th fatality of a Mexican national in ICE custody since October 2021, a statistic that has outraged Mexican officials and human rights advocates on both sides of the border.
In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a news conference on Monday to demand a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hernandez-Mejia's death, as well as the broader issue of Mexican nationals dying in ICE facilities.
