MHRA Accelerates Shift Away from Animal Testing with New Methodologies

UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency drives phase-out of animal testing by supporting developers' use of innovative New Approach Methodologies.
In a major step forward for the pharmaceutical industry, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the United Kingdom has taken decisive action to accelerate the phase-out of animal testing. The agency is now actively supporting developers in making greater use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), a suite of innovative techniques that offer reliable alternatives to traditional animal-based testing.
NAMs encompass a wide range of methods, including computer modeling, organ-on-a-chip technologies, and human cell-based assays. These advanced approaches not only eliminate the need for animal experimentation but also provide more accurate and relevant data for drug development and safety assessments.
