Mullin Takes Helm of Homeland Security Amid Shutdown

Oklahoma Republican Markwayne Mullin confirmed as new Secretary of Homeland Security as department faces budget crisis and staffing challenges.
Markwayne Mullin, the Republican Senator from Oklahoma, has been confirmed as the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Mullin's appointment comes at a critical juncture, as the DHS is grappling with a government shutdown that has left over 100,000 of its more than 250,000 employees working without pay.
Mullin, a businessman and former professional wrestler, has served in the Senate since 2013. He brings a diverse background to the role, having owned and operated several plumbing and oil companies prior to entering politics. His confirmation marks a significant shift in the leadership of the sprawling federal agency responsible for everything from border security to disaster response.
