Nationwide Protests Erupt in India Over Crippling Cooking Gas Crisis

Indian opposition parties have mobilized mass demonstrations against the severe shortage of cooking gas, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict with Iran.
New Delhi - Thousands of Indian citizens have taken to the streets across the country to protest the worsening crisis over the availability of cooking gas. The demonstrations, led by opposition political parties, come in response to the acute shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a critical household fuel for cooking and heating, that has severely impacted families nationwide.
The crisis has been compounded by the ongoing geopolitical tensions between India and Iran, a major supplier of LPG to the South Asian nation. The war between the two countries has disrupted trade and commerce, leading to a sharp decline in LPG imports and a subsequent spike in domestic prices.
Soaring Costs and Long Waiting Lines
Protesters have decried the skyrocketing cost of cooking gas cylinders, which have more than doubled in price over the past year, putting a severe strain on household budgets. Additionally, consumers have reported facing long queues and delays in obtaining new LPG connections or refilling their existing cylinders, further exacerbating the hardship faced by families.
