Navigating the New Realities of Online Teaching
As a part-time college faculty member with years of experience teaching Earth science courses, I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact that generative AI, like ChatGPT, has had on the educational landscape. Once a genuinely fulfilling experience, teaching has now become a daily battle against the challenges posed by this transformative technology.
The shift to asynchronous online courses, where recorded videos replace live sessions, has always presented unique obstacles. Without the ability to closely monitor students' reactions and engagement, the chances of them disengaging and falling behind have increased significantly. But with the rise of ChatGPT, this problem has become even more pronounced, as students can now easily generate high-quality responses and even complete assignments without truly understanding the material.
Grappling with Academic Integrity in the AI Era
As an educator, maintaining academic integrity has always been a top priority. However, the advent of ChatGPT has made this task exponentially more difficult. Students can now easily input prompts and receive detailed, well-written responses that can be passed off as their own work. This has forced me to rethink assessment strategies and constantly be on the lookout for signs of AI-generated content.
Adapting to this new reality has required a significant investment of time and effort. I've had to develop more robust anti-plagiarism measures, implement strict guidelines for the use of AI tools, and regularly update my course materials to stay ahead of the curve. The constant need to ensure the authenticity of student work has become a constant source of stress and frustration, taking away from the joy of teaching that I once cherished.
Fostering Genuine Learning in a Changing Landscape
Despite these challenges, I remain committed to providing my students with a meaningful and valuable educational experience. I've had to rethink my teaching strategies, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and hands-on learning activities that are less susceptible to AI-generated solutions.
