Nottingham Tragedy: Mental Health Professionals' Difficult Decisions

Inquiry reveals Nottingham killer Valdo Calocane was not sectioned due to concerns about over-representation of young black men in custody despite violent incident in 2020.
Nottingham, UK - In a harrowing turn of events, the public inquiry into the Nottingham triple killing has revealed that the mental health professionals tasked with assessing Valdo Calocane in 2020 decided not to detain him, despite a violent incident, due to concerns over the over-representation of young black men in custody.
Calocane, who has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, fatally stabbed 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and 65-year-old Ian Coates, and severely injured three others on June 13, 2023. This tragic incident has sparked a public inquiry to understand the factors that led to the devastating outcome.
According to the inquiry, mental health staff had encountered Calocane in 2020 following a violent incident, but they ultimately decided not to detain him. The decision was influenced by research that highlighted the disproportionate number of young black men in the criminal justice system, which they feared could further marginalize Calocane and exacerbate his mental health challenges.
