NWSL's Impactful 'Rodman Rule' Shakes Up Rosters

The NWSL's new 'High Impact Player' (HIP) rule, inspired by Trinity Rodman's offseason saga, is already transforming team rosters across the league.
The NWSL's new High Impact Player (HIP) rule, initially dubbed the 'Rodman Rule', has been quietly in the works for years, contrary to initial perceptions. Though inspired by the offseason transfer saga of star player Trinity Rodman, the league says it had been exploring ways to keep pace with the rapidly growing women's soccer market as early as the summer of 2023.
Stephanie Lee, the NWSL's vice-president of player affairs, explained that the league saw a need to adapt its roster rules to accommodate the increasing demand and value of top-tier talent. The HIP designation allows teams to sign up to two players outside their normal salary cap, providing them the flexibility to attract and retain marquee players who can drive fan engagement and elevate the overall level of play.
