One in Five Trump Voters Considering Abandoning GOP in 2028

New survey reveals cracks in Trump's working-class coalition, as 20% of his 2024 voters may defect from Republicans in the next election
A new survey has uncovered some surprising insights into the shifting dynamics within the coalition that propelled Donald Trump to the White House in 2024. According to the findings, a significant portion of his 2024 voters – around 20% – are now considering abandoning the Republican Party in the 2028 presidential election.
The survey, conducted by the Center for Working-Class Politics and co-authored by scholars Jared Abbott and Dustin Guastella, sampled nearly 2,000 Trump voters to gauge their attitudes and voting intentions. Respondents were asked about their plans for the 2028 election, as well as their views on immigration – a key issue that has long been a cornerstone of Trump's political platform.
The results suggest that while Trump's working-class support remains strong, it is starting to show signs of erosion. This could have significant implications for the Republican Party's future electoral prospects, as it grapples with the challenge of maintaining a coalition that appeals to both the traditional conservative base and the disaffected working-class voters who have been drawn to Trump's populist message.
