Oscar-Nominated 'Homebound' Celebrates Friendship in Divided India
Inspired by a viral photo, the award-winning film 'Homebound' tells the true story of a Muslim man and his Hindu Dalit friend amid India's polarized communal landscape.
Homebound, a daring new movie about the unlikely friendship between a Muslim man and a Hindu Dalit, has been shortlisted for an Oscar. The film, now streaming on Netflix, defies current trends in Indian cinema by shining a light on the country's polarized communal relations under a decade of Hindu nationalist rule.
The story behind Homebound began with a now-viral photograph taken in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The image captured Mohammad Saiyub, a Muslim man, cradling his childhood friend Amrit Kumar, a Hindu Dalit, by the side of a road as they made a nearly 1,000-mile journey back to their home state.
