With a sense of both awe and unease, families and aviation enthusiasts have made the pilgrimage to the perimeter of RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire to witness the powerful maneuvers of American warplanes. The Wilkinson clan, hailing from Hampshire, were among the daytrippers who arose at the crack of dawn, packing their car with the essentials of a seaside outing – folding chairs, blankets, and a picnic – before making the 80-mile journey to the air base.
