Populist Far Right Faces Setbacks Across Europe

Examining the declining fortunes of far-right political movements in recent European elections and referendums, despite earlier momentum.
The far-right political movements that had appeared to gain significant momentum across Europe in recent years have faced a series of setbacks in recent elections and referendums. From France to Italy to Sweden, right-wing populist parties have struggled to convert their earlier gains into decisive victories, raising questions about the durability of their support.
In France, Marine Le Pen's National Rally party was unable to capitalize on its strong showing in the 2017 presidential election, finishing a distant second to incumbent Emmanuel Macron in this year's vote. Similarly, in Italy, the right-wing coalition led by Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party secured a victory in the September 2022 general election, but fell short of the outright majority many had predicted.
