Vandermeersch, the former head of Mediahuis's Irish operations, admitted to 'falling into the trap of hallucinations' when utilizing AI to wrongly attribute statements to people.
The investigation was prompted by concerns over the accuracy of Vandermeersch's reporting, with the publisher of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and the Irish Independent taking swift action to address the issue. Vandermeersch's suspension highlights the growing challenges faced by the media industry as the use of AI becomes more prevalent in news production.
