Reddit Hit With $19.6M Fine for Lax Age Verification

UK regulator cracks down on Reddit's failure to adequately verify users' ages, exposing minors to inappropriate content
Reddit, the popular online discussion platform, has been slapped with a hefty £14.5 million ($19.6 million) fine by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for its failure to properly verify the ages of its users. The regulator found that Reddit's lax age verification measures resulted in the unlawful processing of personal information belonging to children under the age of 13.
The ICO's investigation revealed that Reddit did not have any robust age assurance mechanism in place, leaving the platform open to underage users and potentially exposing them to inappropriate and harmful content. This violation of the UK's data protection laws has now resulted in a significant financial penalty for the company.
