Refugees Face Abuse and Violence at Bosnia-Croatia Border

Refugees seeking to enter the EU from Bosnia report assaults, robberies, and mistreatment by border officials and police, according to new allegations.
As refugees attempt to cross the border from Bosnia into Croatia, a member state of the European Union, many are facing abuse and violence from the very authorities tasked with securing the frontier. More than a dozen refugees have come forward with allegations of assaults, robberies, and inhumane treatment by border officials and police officers stationed along the Bosnia-Croatia border.
The refugees, who hail from a variety of countries including Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, describe a distressing pattern of abuse. They claim to have been beaten with batons, kicked, and robbed of their personal belongings - including cash, phones, and documents - as they tried to illegally cross the border in search of a better life in the EU.
One Afghan refugee, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of reprisal, recounted a particularly harrowing experience.
