Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who led the high-profile investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election, has died at the age of 81. Mueller's career spanned decades, from his time as a decorated Marine in the Vietnam War to his tenure as the longest-serving FBI director since J. Edgar Hoover.
Born in 1944 in New York City, Mueller graduated from Princeton University and earned a law degree from the University of Virginia. He then joined the Marine Corps, where he served with distinction, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his bravery in combat.
After his military service, Mueller pursued a career in law, working as a federal prosecutor in several high-profile cases, including the prosecution of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. In 2001, he was appointed as the director of the FBI by President George W. Bush, a position he would hold until 2013.
