Renowned Lawyer to Probe Tragic Death of MP Sir David Amess

Former Justice Secretary Sir Robert Buckland KC has been tapped to lead an independent review into the tragic murder of Conservative MP Sir David Amess.
In a move to shed light on the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Conservative Member of Parliament Sir David Amess, the UK government has appointed Sir Robert Buckland KC, a highly respected former Justice Secretary, to conduct an independent review. Amess, who had served in the House of Commons since 1983, was fatally stabbed while meeting with constituents in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, in October 2021.
The review, which will be carried out in cooperation with Essex Police and other relevant authorities, aims to examine the events leading up to and during the attack, as well as the broader implications for the safety and security of elected officials. Buckland, a senior lawyer and former government minister, is widely regarded as the ideal candidate to lead this sensitive and important investigation.
"Sir David Amess was a much-loved and respected member of Parliament, and his senseless murder sent shockwaves through the political establishment and the nation as a whole," said a government spokesperson. "The independent review led by Sir Robert Buckland will ensure a thorough and impartial examination of the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, with the goal of informing future measures to protect our elected representatives."
Buckland, who served as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice from 2019 to 2021, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the task. He is known for his integrity, impartiality, and commitment to the rule of law. The review is expected to delve into a range of issues, including the security protocols in place for MPs, the potential for radicalization and lone-actor threats, and the broader societal factors that may have contributed to the attack.
"It is a solemn duty to undertake this review, and I am committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation that will provide valuable insights and recommendations to help safeguard our democracy," Buckland said in a statement. "The tragic loss of Sir David Amess has left an indelible mark, and it is our responsibility to honor his memory by ensuring that such senseless acts of violence never happen again."
The review is expected to take several months to complete, and its findings will be made public upon its conclusion. Relatives of Sir David Amess, as well as other members of Parliament and key stakeholders, will be consulted throughout the process to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events and their impact.
