RNLI Rescues Surge: UK Beach Lifesavers See Doubled Caseload in 2025

RNLI lifeguards in the UK and Channel Islands aided over 35,000 people in 2025, double the prior years, as good weather and the Middle East crisis drove increased beach activity.
The number of people helped by RNLI lifeguards on the beaches of the UK and the Channel Islands doubled last year, and the charity believes the Middle East crisis may lead to an even busier spring and summer in 2026. While RNLI lifeguards went to the aid of about 18,000 people in 2023 and 2024, this leapt to more than 35,000 in 2025, a spike the organization puts down to a combination of good weather and an increased interest in seaside pursuits.
The RNLI, a charitable organization that provides lifeguard services and operates a fleet of rescue boats, has seen a dramatic rise in the number of people requiring assistance at beaches across the UK and its surrounding islands. This surge in activity is believed to be driven by a number of factors, including the favorable weather conditions that have drawn larger crowds to the coast, as well as the ongoing Middle East crisis, which may be leading more people to seek respite and recreation closer to home.
