Mirra Andreeva, the promising 18-year-old Russian tennis star, saw her Indian Wells title defense come to a bitter end on Monday as she lost a hard-fought three-set match against Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic.
The match, which Siniakova ultimately won 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, was marked by Andreeva's visible frustration, as the teenager was seen smashing her racket on several occasions and even gesturing towards the crowd in an unsportsmanlike display.
Andreeva's tournament had started in dominant fashion, as she had breezed through her opening-round match with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory. However, the young Russian was clearly troubled by the resilience and tactical play of the world No. 44 Siniakova, who refused to be intimidated by her younger opponent.
