Senegal Lawyers Take on CAF's AFCON Decision, Motsepe Defends Morocco

Senegal seeks legal action against CAF's controversial decision to award the 2022 African Cup of Nations title to Morocco. CAF president Patrice Motsepe defends the decision.
Senegal, the runner-up in the 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), has instructed its lawyers to take action against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the controversial decision to award the tournament title to Morocco. The move comes as CAF president Patrice Motsepe defends the decision, claiming it was made in the best interests of African football.
The AFCON final, held on February 6th in Olembe, Cameroon, ended in a 0-0 draw between Senegal and Morocco, leading to a penalty shootout. Morocco emerged victorious, securing their first AFCON title since 1976. However, the match was marred by a deadly stampede outside the stadium that claimed the lives of at least 8 people and injured over 38 others.
In the aftermath, Senegal, which was seeking its first AFCON title, has accused CAF of unfairly favoring Morocco and has vowed to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The Senegalese Football Federation has instructed its legal team to file an appeal, citing the tragic events that occurred outside the stadium as well as the perceived bias in the officiating during the final.
Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, has defended the decision to award the AFCON title to Morocco, stating that it was made in the best interests of African football. Motsepe argued that the decision took into account the overall performance of the Moroccan team throughout the tournament, as well as the country's ability to host and organize the event effectively.
