Soaring Gas Prices Hammer Work Commuters and Gig Workers

Skyrocketing fuel costs squeeze budgets for millions of Americans who rely on personal vehicles for their jobs, from delivery drivers to self-employed tradespeople.
For millions of Americans, a personal vehicle is an essential tool of the trade. From delivery drivers and rideshare providers to self-employed electricians, nannies, and home health aides, many workers across the country depend on their own cars, vans, or trucks to earn a living. However, the relentless rise in gasoline prices has become a crushing burden for these workers, cutting deeply into their already slim profit margins.
Take the case of Leslie Sherman-Shafer, an Uber driver in the San Francisco Bay Area. She used to be able to fill up her Toyota Corolla for around $25, but now that same tank of gas costs her nearly double. "It used to cost her around $25 to fill up her Toyota Corolla. She's spent close to $50 at the pump recently," the article notes.
