Social Media Usage Declines in the UK: Shifting Landscape Revealed

New Ofcom study shows a decline in UK adults posting on social media, as platforms emphasize short-form video content. Experts analyze the evolving social media trends.
Social media usage in the United Kingdom has seen a notable decline, according to a recent study by Ofcom, the country's communications regulator. The findings suggest a shift in how people, particularly younger adults, are engaging with various social media platforms.
The Ofcom report indicates that the proportion of UK adults who post on social media has decreased, from 67% in 2021 to 63% in 2022. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger demographics, with only 67% of 18-to-24-year-olds now posting content, down from 71% the previous year.
Experts believe this change in user behavior reflects the growing emphasis on short-form video content, which has become increasingly popular on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. As these platforms prioritize and promote such content, users may be shifting away from traditional text-based or image-sharing social media activities.
