Somalia's Battle Against IS: Relentless Hunt for Terrorist Strongholds

As ISIS fighters flee Syria and Iraq, Somalia becomes a new battleground in the fight against terrorism. Security forces vow to hunt down extremists wherever they hide.
In the wake of the Islamic State's (IS) retreat from its strongholds in Syria and Iraq, the terror group has established a foothold in Somalia, prompting a relentless effort by security forces to root them out. Somalia has become a key part of IS's global network, with fighters seeking refuge in the Horn of Africa nation after being driven out of their previous sanctuaries.
"We will go wherever they hide," vowed Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, underscoring the government's determination to confront the threat posed by the IS presence in the country. The Somali National Army, backed by the African Union peacekeeping mission AMISOM, has intensified its operations to flush out IS fighters and dismantle their cells across the country.
